Stephen's City is a community of about 2,000 residents located in Frederick County, in northernmost Virginia. It lies to the west of the Washington D.C. area in the Shenandoah Valley.

History

Stephen's City was originally settled in the mid-18th century by settlers of Scottish, German and Irish ancestry. It was first known as Newtown, and that moniker appears in conjunction with many aspects of the community to this day. It was founded in 1758, and the town is the second oldest in the Shenandoah Valley. In the late 1700s, it gained notoriety as the home of the Newtown wagon. During the Civil War, Stephen's City found itself near various conflagrations. Today, however, many historical structures still remain.

Parks and Recreation

Just outside of town is the 330-acre Sherando Park with its ball fields, 25m pool, hiking trails and 4.5-acre fishing lake. Volleyball courts, bocce courts and tennis courts are among the numerous amenities offered here. Disc golfers will enjoy the 18-hole layout. A classic gazebo adds to the charm of Sherando Park.

In town, Newtown Commons, also referred to as Newtown Park, is situated along Main Street. Bel Air Street Park offers a playground for the kids.

Attractions and Activities

Just south of Stephen's City, on U.S. 11, is the Family Drive-in Theatre. Those that invest in Stephen's City real estate can enjoy the two-screen theater that converted to digital projection in 2013. It is just one of ten drive-ins remaining in the Commonwealth.

Every Memorial Day weekend, the Newtown Heritage Festival is held in Stephen's City. The three-day event offers wagon rides, a parade and fireworks. Live music fills the air at Newtown Commons, and local artisans sell their creations here. One interesting aspect of the festival is the Cornhole Tournament held at the ball field off Locust Street.

Stephen's City participates in a unique event, the Route 11 Yard Crawl. In mid-August, yard sales stretch from Newtown Commons all the way to New Market, Virginia, a distance of about 43 miles.
