Winchester, Virginia, is a community of approximately 28,000 residents in the northwestern part of the state, about 75 miles west of the nation's capital. The Shenandoah Valley was considered a sacred hunting ground for centuries prior to the arrival of settlers of European descent in 1729. Fort Loudoun was built in 1756, based upon a design by Col. During the Revolutionary War, local farmers were active in feeding members of the Virginia Militia as they passed through. During the Civil War, a number of battles were fought in the Winchester area. In the early 20th century, Winchester became the first city south of the Potomac to install electric lights.

One of the major parks in Winchester is Jim Barnett Park, located adjacent to Shenandoah University. The extensive facilities include indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, outdoor basketball courts, ball fields and a disc golf course.
